Director of Resource Development in Chicago, IL

Organization The Asian American Institute was established in 1992 as a pan-Asian, 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, non-partisan organization. The mission is to empower the Asian American community through advocacy, by utilizing research, education and coalition building. Current programs include community organizing, leadership development, and legal advocacy. A member of the Asian American Center for Advancing Justice, AAI coordinates it work with its affiliates Asian American Justice Center in Washington, D.C., Asian Pacific American Legal Center of Southern California, and Asian Law Caucus in San Francisco.
Position
The Director of Resource Development will provide strategic, visionary leadership to enhance the scope and reach of the current donor base, diversify the current funding base, and build toward an expanded annual budget of $1.25 million in the FY [removed phone] timeframe;
Fundraising ? 60%
Work closely with the CEO and Senior Director of Programs to set fundraising strategy consistent with programmatic goals
Increase and diversify revenue streams to help build programmatic and organizational capacity
Identify and cultivate individuals capable of making gifts of $2,500 and above
Identify opportunities and effectively execute strategies for enhancing relationships with the philanthropic community and potential partners
Provide support to the solicitation efforts of the CEO in fulfilling his/her fundraising responsibilities
Lead the department?s efforts to secure large ($5,000+), multi-year grants
Work closely with marketing and program staff to expand sponsorship opportunities
Support the CEO, Board, and staff in on-going stewardship
Designs, implements and manages all fundraising activities including annual giving, endowment and capital campaigns, special projects, and other school-related solicitations
Manages all strategies and activities for donor cultivation, solicitation, and relations
Maintains contact with and develops grant proposals for foundations and corporations
Develops a comprehensive planned-giving program as the need becomes appropriate
Board Management ? 5%
Provide staff support to the Board of Directors including managing their solicitation activities and staffing Development committees
Develop and implement Board member events and oversee ongoing cultivation and education programs for Board and high-level volunteers
Assist with Board recruitment and training as needed
Special Events ? 5%
Create and execute high-level cultivation and stewardship events
Work with volunteers to design and execute AAI fund raising events, including its signature Milestone Awards Benefit, and other events as required
Develop innovative ways to expand net proceeds
Communications ? 5%
Oversee internal and external organizational communications, including print and broadcast media, web and social media, publications, external marketing materials and internal communication protocols and manuals
Ensure that web sites and other external communications (e-newsletters, annual report, marketing materials, news releases, press kits, online ads, etc.) are clear, effective, consistent with plans, and serve organizational goals
Department Management ? 15%
Lead, develop, manage, and evaluate development and communications staff and fundraising volunteers
Develop and manage departmental income and expense budgets
Develop staff, intern, free-lancer, and/or consultant job descriptions and work plans
Supervise the timely submission of proposals, budgets, updates, and end-of-year reports to corporate, foundation, and/or government funders
Review and approve all grant proposals, sponsorship materials, and department publications
Serve as a member of AAI?s senior staff
Recommend policies and procedures regarding fund raising and communications
Prepare proposals, reports, and collateral supporting materials for volunteers and the CEO, and AAI?s senior staff when needed
Supervise the administrative work of staff to ensure development records are reconciled with accounting records, timely acknowledgments are sent, donor and prospect files are maintained, and database is maintained
Creates office systems to support all Development and Communications projects and operations
Advancing Justice ? 10%
Participate in monthly Development Committee meetings and bi-weekly Communication Committee meetings
Seek out new national sponsorship opportunities as AAI develops new relationships and builds its established relationships and resources
Share information with AACAJ Affiliates and provide input on recommended policies and procedures in areas of development and external communications
Integrate development and external communication programs, policies and procedures identified and agreed upon by all affiliates into AAI policies and procedures and work plans
Job Qualifications
Bachelor?s Degree required, Master?s degree strongly preferred
Knowledge of and sensitivity to the Asian American community and its issues
At least 5 years progressive and measurably proven experience in fundraising;
At least 3 years of experience leading and managing teams
At least 2 years with marketing communications, public relations, media relations and/or social networking
Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
Organized with the ability to manage multiple projects/tasks with deadlines
Proven track record of successfully cultivating individual donor base, including major donors and planned giving
Self-motivated with ability to take initiative, as well as able to work both independently and as part of a team
PC literate with working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and the Internet familiarity with database programs and googleDoc environment is a plus
